Chapter 5
Chapter 5, which was this weeks reading, is entitled "Reading and Writing Multimodal Texts." Interesting. I find this interesting because Sarah Kajder cited the statistic "only 31 percent of eighth graders are able to read and write with proficiency. Only 31%? Really? I think one problem is that schools and teachers focus too much on standardized testing and the 5 paragraph format that they aren't showing kids other ways reading and writing can be fun and beneficial. Younger and younger today kids are getting cell phones, texting, getting facebook pages and tweeting. I think teachers need to embrace that technology and show students different forms of multimodal literacies that garner a kids interest and make them want to read and write because it's fun. I think students could do a project like we did in class where we have to share a digital tool in class that can be applied to that subject matter and explore it in front of the class. Teachers can learn something new and most importantly students can as well.

I think creating a new tech-friendly environment at school could help create a better atmosphere for students in these coming generations. Even if you just allow the students to listen to headphones, they will remember that you gave them a little bit of leeway that allowed them to delve deeper while writing a podcast.
