Technology

The readings for this week describe the importance as well as the new literacy outlets and why they are important in the classroom. It is no shock that we are a very "connected" generation. I mean most of us have smart phones and have a profile on more than one social networking site plus we also use computers for processing our class papers and readings too. College classrooms for the most part are very technology based, but does middle school or high schools embrace the technology rise?

I went to a high school that wasn't very tech savyy. I was on my high schools' news station and we were using equipment that was literally circa 1998. We had a computer lab with new Dell desktops, but there were not class sets. In middle school there were a traveling set of Apple Mac laptops. I my journalism class my junior and senior years we used typewriters, yes you read correctly, to type out all of the copy for our spread in the yearbook. My school didn't have much in the ways of technology because we are definitely not a wealthy school district. However in the new K-12 school we have each classroom is equipped with SMART boards, classroom desktop computers, and a larger computer lab.

It is as if less fortunate schools fall short when it comes to technology because the money to pay for it isn't there. In result the students are the ones that fall short because they are not getting a multimodal learning experience.  I think if you have the technology there you must embrace it and expose students to it so they no how to use technology not just in the social way but in a way they can use for life.
